Brendon Collins, An Australian builder has the most 10 star ratings under Victorian Government rules according to this recent article.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It started 40\nyears ago when portable cooler, a block of ice and fluctuating temperatures of\na week, helped spur this 20 year old builder to design and build thermally\neffective and energy efficient homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By experimenting\nwith different methods in his weatherboard house, he has managed to discover\nwhy the ice in this cooler didn\u2019t melt for 4 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Victoria,\nthe minimum standard for houses is 6, but in recent development they are\nranging from 7 to 8.5 stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brendon\nCollins, who founded Lightwood Constructions, says that he was an early adopter\nof this because \u2018it was the right thing to do\u2019. He was also conscious that a\nlot of his buyers were elderly on limited incomes meaning that have low power bills\nwere essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collins said\nthe changes to the Victorian Efficiency Scorecard has not been hard to adjust to\nas since he has always been ensuring that he has a high performing outcome\nbuildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blower Door Testing<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Collins has been doing blower door testing on his own houses to identify any issues and then tests them again to check if the problems have been fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other practices\nhave included have all living area oriented north for passive heating in the\ncold winters of Wodonga; double glazing, full roof, wall and slab insulation\nwith inspections to making sure it\u2019s been installed correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lightweight\nconstruction material that have been used in his recent homes because bricks\nthermal mass made it difficult to cool homes at night during the regions hot\nsummers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He regularly\nspeaks about his building system to the construction and property sectors, and\nother builders come to his site to learn how they can improve thermal and\nenergy performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
