Description

The Sound Insulation Testing Level 2S course is a comprehensive three-day program designed to equip delegates with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct sound insulation tests on walls and floors. This course is specifically tailored to meet the requirements of BB93 for schools, which includes background noise measurements and assessments of speech intelligibility. The course is structured with two days dedicated to learning and practical exercises, followed by a final day of examinations to evaluate the delegates’ understanding and proficiency.

The primary aim of the course is to train delegates to accurately carry out and report on sound insulation tests. This involves a thorough understanding of various sound measurement techniques and the ability to apply these techniques in real-world settings. Over the course of the training, participants will learn how to combine, average, and subtract decibel values, a fundamental skill for interpreting sound measurements accurately. Additionally, they will be trained to set up and calibrate sound sources and measuring equipment. This includes performing routine checks to ensure the equipment is functioning correctly, which is crucial for obtaining reliable data.

Delegates will also gain the skills to select appropriate measurement numbers, locations, and durations, ensuring comprehensive and representative sound tests. The course covers the measurement of octave and 1/3 octave band sound pressure levels, essential for detailed acoustic analysis. Participants will learn how to calculate dBA and dBZ levels from these measurements, enabling them to assess different aspects of sound pressure and its impact on the environment.

A significant portion of the course focuses on carrying out airborne and impact sound insulation tests in accordance with BS EN ISO 140 parts 4 and 7. Understanding these standards is critical for ensuring that sound insulation tests meet the necessary regulatory requirements and provide accurate assessments of sound transmission through walls and floors.

An important aspect of the training is understanding the differences between ISO 140 and other guidance documents, including Approved Document E and Part B. This knowledge is vital for navigating various regulatory frameworks and ensuring that all tests are conducted in compliance with the relevant standards.

The course includes several key modules designed to provide a comprehensive education in sound insulation testing. These modules are:

  • Basic Concepts
  • Room Acoustic Concepts
  • Sound Transmission Concepts
  • Standardised Measurement Methodology
  • Practical Aspects
  • Report Writing

In addition to these core modules, the course also covers the use of the SITMA Lodgement system. This system is essential for managing and submitting test results and reports, ensuring that delegates are well-versed in the administrative aspects of sound insulation testing.

By the end of the course, delegates will be proficient in conducting sound insulation tests, interpreting the results, and compiling comprehensive reports. They will understand the intricacies of different measurement methods and the practicalities of setting up and executing tests in various environments. The examination on the third day will test their theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they are fully prepared to apply their training in real-world scenarios.
