BS EN ISO 16283-2:2020, titled “Acoustics — Field measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements — Part 2: Impact sound insulation,” specifies procedures for determining impact sound insulation in buildings through sound pressure measurements.

The standard is applicable to room volumes ranging from 10 m³ to 250 m³ and covers a frequency range from 50 Hz to 5,000 Hz. It describes the use of two impact sources:

• Tapping Machine: Suitable for assessing light, hard impacts such as footsteps from individuals wearing hard-heeled footwear or dropped objects.
• Rubber Ball: Suitable for assessing heavy, soft impacts such as barefoot walking or children jumping.

The test results can be used to quantify, assess, and compare impact sound insulation in both furnished and unfurnished rooms, regardless of whether the sound field approximates a diffuse field. Frequency-dependent measurements can be converted into a single-number rating using the procedures outlined in ISO 717-2.
