HETAS Core Knowledge & Sweeping Module

This two-day HETAS Core Knowledge and Sweeping Course provides a structured route into the solid fuel and chimney sweeping sector, combining the essential foundation knowledge with practical, hands-on training.

Delivered at The Building Performance Hub, the course is designed to build technical understanding before developing the skills required to safely sweep, assess and re-commission solid fuel appliances.

Day one focuses on the HETAS Core Knowledge course, which underpins all HETAS pathways, while day two progresses into the HETAS Sweeping Module, where candidates apply that knowledge in practical scenarios.

Delegates can book Day 2 only, please contact TBPH for details.

Additional Information

Day 1 – Core Knowledge

The HETAS Core Knowledge training course provides a comprehensive introduction to solid fuel, wood and biomass systems. It is suitable for those new to the industry as well as experienced professionals seeking a structured refresh of key principles

The training covers the fundamental concepts that underpin safe installation, operation and maintenance. Learners will develop an understanding of fuel types, combustion processes and ventilation requirements, alongside the relevant regulations and industry guidance that govern this sector.

This module forms the foundation for all further HETAS training and is a prerequisite for progressing onto specialist pathways, including sweeping.

Day 2 – Sweeping Module

The Sweeping module builds on the knowledge gained in the Core course, focusing on the practical skills and procedures required to safely sweep and assess solid fuel appliances.

This one-day module combines theory with hands-on training, allowing candidates to develop competence in real-world scenarios. It is designed for operatives who carry out, or intend to carry out, chimney sweeping activities and want to demonstrate their capability in line with HETAS standards.

Throughout the day, learners will cover key areas including safe working practices, pre-assessment surveys, sweeping techniques and the correct handling and classification of soot. The course also addresses appliance re-commissioning, sealing methods and the identification of unsafe situations using the HETAS Unsafe Situations Procedure (HUSP).

Course Structure

This combined course is delivered over two consecutive days:

  • Day 1: Core Knowledge (theory-based foundation)
  • Day 2: Sweeping Module (practical and assessment-based training)

The format ensures candidates gain both the underpinning technical understanding and the applied skills required to work safely and competently.

Assessment & Certification

Assessment is carried out through a combination of theory-based learning and practical evaluation.

Successful candidates will receive a HETAS Statement of Results, confirming completion of both the Core Knowledge and Sweeping modules and supporting progression within the HETAS pathway.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for individuals entering the solid fuel or chimney sweeping sector, as well as those looking to expand their existing services.

It is particularly relevant for installers, technicians and operatives who require a recognised route into sweeping activities or who are progressing towards HETAS registration and associated schemes.

Prerequisites

The Core Knowledge (Day 1) module does not require any prior experience or qualifications. It is designed as the entry point to all HETAS training pathways and is suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to formalise their understanding.

The Sweeping Module (Day 2) normally requires prior Core Knowledge and relevant experience or qualifications. Candidates are expected to have completed the Core module and be able to demonstrate one of the following before attending:

  • A recognised HETAS qualification (such as Dry Appliance Installer, Biomass Appliance Installer or Servicing Technician)
  • Demonstrable, relevant work experience in the sector
