Entry Routes

Entry Route 1 - Via Approved Training Partner

Level 1

ATTMA authorises external organisations to provide approved training courses that can be used as evidence when making an application to join the scheme. To successfully complete the Level 1 training course, all candidates must take and pass three examination parts:

Exams Required

A Theory Examination
An Envelope Area Assessment
A Practical Assessment
3 Unpaid Tests
For acceptance onto the ATTMA Scheme with an initial on-site audit, candidates must provide the course tutor with evidence of 3 unpaid, compliant sample air tightness tests that have been completed outside of the controlled environment. The tests must include, as a minimum:
Evidence of the envelope area calculations, including workings
A full set of test data
A copy of the calibration data for their devices

Level 2

To successfully complete the Level 2 training course, all candidates must take and pass the two examination parts:

Exams Required

A Theory Examination
A Practical Assessment

Level 3

There are no training programs for Level 3

Envelope Area Technician

Basic Envelope Area Training is included as part of the Level 1 requirements. Additional training is known to exist but is not endorsed by ATTMA.

To successfully complete the Advanced Envelope Area Training Course for Level 2, all candidates must pass the ATTMA EA Examination.

Entry Route 2 - Advanced Prior Experience and/or Learning (APEL)

Level 1

ATTMA requires a minimum of the following information to be included with the application to consider the APEL route as a viable option for an applicant at Level 1

Information Required:

Raw Test Data - Typically the file from the testing, such as an exml, .bld or .attma file. This could also be a printed copy of the data.
Envelope Area Calculations - The Envelope Area Calculation, including the original drawings, sketch and workings out. This could also be provided as a 3D model using programs such as Sketchup.
Test Report - A copy of the full compliant test report issued, or a report that has been generated specifically for the purpose of APEL.
Evidence of Existing Competence - A copy of any experience, competence, qualifications, historical evidence or any such information which demonstrates that the company or tester has been competently trained and/or assessed as part of their application.
These requirements are also required for those wishing to apply for the Low Energy Buildings (PH tick).

Level 2

ATTMA requires a minimum of the following information to be included with the application to consider the APEL route as a viable option for an applicant at Level 2

Information Required:

Raw Test Data - Typically the file from the testing, such as an exml, .bld or .attma file. This could also be a printed copy of the data.

Advanced EA APEL

ATTMA requires a minimum of the following information to be included with the application to consider the APEL route as a viable option for an applicant at Advanced EA

Information Required:

Envelope Area Calculations - The Envelope Area Calculation, including the original drawings, sketch and workings out. This could also be provided as a 3D model using programs such as Sketchup.
Evidence of Existing Competence - A copy of any experience, competence, qualifications, historical evidence or any such information which demonstrates that the company or tester has been competently trained and/or assessed as part of their application.

Where required, ATTMA may request for additional evidence to be provided, or that elements of the aforementioned assessment process is completed e.g., if applying for Advanced EA, the APEL applicant may be asked to complete an ATTMA provided envelope area examination to demonstrate competence with EA
calculations. This will only be done where application information is insufficient, incomplete or there is a justifiable reason or concern for doing so.

Entry Route 3 - NVQ or other Recognised Qualification

Not Currently Used

Information Required:

Under the original MTCs, prospective members could apply to join ATTMA or upgrade their competence level by providing evidence of an applicable educationbased route.
Currently, there are no recognised NVQ or other qualification routes for air tightness testing, as the methods and regulations are not taught at any educational facility known to ATTMA.
