SITMA members have now lodged more than 200,000 tests across over 35,000 unique sites, since SITMA started in 2018, a significant milestone that underlines both the scale of activity within the association and the sustained commitment of members to quality and compliance.
With a current membership of 120+ companies, this level of testing represents a substantial collective effort. On average, it equates to well over 1,600 tests per member, carried out across a wide range of locations and building types. Just as importantly, the spread across 35,000 individual sites shows that this is not activity concentrated among a small number of large projects, but consistent engagement across the country and across the membership.
What stands out is the steady growth in the number of unique sites being tested year on year. This indicates that members are not only maintaining testing volumes but are also reaching new locations and new clients. The expansion in site coverage reflects a growing recognition of the importance of professional testing and the role SITMA members play in supporting building safety, performance and compliance.
Annual test totals have also increased over time, moving from relatively modest volumes in earlier years to consistently high levels more recently. This points to a maturing market in which testing is embedded as a routine and expected part of construction, refurbishment and maintenance activity. It also suggests that SITMA members are increasingly trusted to deliver this work at scale.
This growth has taken place alongside important developments within the association itself. In 2024, SITMA achieved UKAS accreditation to EN ISO/IEC 17024, providing independent confirmation of the robustness and credibility of its certification framework. Since gaining accreditation, SITMA has successfully completed its UKAS audits over the past two years, reinforcing confidence in the competence, governance and consistency underpinning member activity.
While monthly test volumes naturally fluctuate due to seasonal factors and project cycles, the longer-term picture is one of resilience and consistency. Even as individual months vary, overall yearly totals continue to demonstrate a strong and stable baseline of activity. This is a more meaningful indicator of sector health than short-term peaks or dips.
For SITMA as an association, these figures provide tangible evidence of impact. They show how a relatively compact membership base is collectively delivering a large volume of technically demanding work across a very broad footprint. They also reinforce the value of shared standards, guidance and independent oversight, which support members in maintaining quality while operating at scale.
Reaching 200,000 lodged tests is not simply a numerical achievement. It reflects years of accumulated expertise, investment in skills and systems, and an ongoing commitment by members to do the job properly. With UKAS accreditation now established and site coverage continuing to widen, SITMA members are well placed to build on this foundation in the years ahead.
